الْمَسَد

"The Palm Fibre"

The only surah condemning a named person: Abu Lahab, the Prophet's uncle who fiercely opposed Islam. Remarkably, Abu Lahab never accepted Islam after this surah — confirming its prophecy.

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ

Tabbat yadā abī lahabin wa-tabb

May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and may he perish

مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ

Mā aghnā 'anhu māluhu wa-mā kasab

His wealth and gains will not avail him

سَيَصْلَى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

Sayaṣlā nāran dhāta lahab

He will burn in a flaming fire

وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ

Wa-mra'atuhu ḥammālata l-ḥaṭab

And his wife, the carrier of firewood

فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ

Fī jīdihā ḥablun min masad

Around her neck is a rope of palm fibre
